The Dutch Municipalities and India



Thanks to the initiatives taken by the PIO/NRI community  and  the Indian Embassy  in the Netherlands
 we have a  few statues and busts of Gandhiji, Nehru and Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore. 
They are:

This monument was built thanks to the initiative of the Stichting Standbeeld Mahatma Gandhi. It is in a grass field in Amsterdam (Chruchilllaan near Scheldestraat). It was unveiled on 2-10-1990 by Prime Minister Lubbers. Every year the Surnami Hindustani and the Indian community jointly celebrates Gandhijayanti here.

Bust of Gandhi in The Hague
The bust of Mahatma Ghandi was a gift of India to the Peace Palace. The bust was unveiled on 13 November 1952 by Prime Minister of the Netherlands W. Drees in the presence of the Ambassador of India B.N. Chakravarty and the President of the Carnegie-Foundation S.J.R. de Monchy.

The statue (height 60 cm) itself was cast in bronze by the Indian sculptor Mr. Sanyal. The pedestal of white marble was especially made by Steenhouwerij Geuzenkamp in The Hague.

The bust is to be found in the ground corridor of the Peace Palace near the Great Hall of Justice.

On the occasion of 100th birthday (14-11-1889 - 14-11-1989) of Pandit Nehru, The Indian Embassy, The Hague presented a bust of Pandit Nehru to the Peace Palace (International Court of Justice) in The Hague.

The sculptor of the statue was Mrs. Latika Katt.

On behalf of the government of India, the Ambassador of India Mr V.K. Grover handed over the bust to the management of the Peace palace.

Statue of Gandhi in The Hague
It was 130 years ago (1873 - 2003) that the forefathers of the Hindustani community of Surinam sailed to Surinam with the ship Lalla Rookh as indenture labourers. It was 30 years ago (1974/75 – 2004/05) in the fore- and aftermath of the independence of Surinam, a mass migration to the Netherlands took place.

In order to commemorate the same and to celebrate the 30 years immigration to the Netherlands, the Sarnami Institute of Netherlands, under the leadership of Mr Rabin Baldewsingh, presented on behalf of the Surinami community, a National Immigration Momument and a statue of Mahatma Gandhi to the municipality of The Hague.

The monument and the statue are situated at the Hobbemaplein in The Hague. The statue of Gandhi-ji is designed by Karel Gomes. The Immigration Monument is design by Helen Ferdinand. The statue together with the Immigration Monument were unveiled on 25th June 2004 by Ms Rita Verdronk, Foreigner Affairs and Integration Minister and mayor of The Hague Mr W.J.Deetman.

Bust of Gandhi in Zoetermeer
A bust of Mahatma Gandhi sculptured by Mr Ramesh Bist, born in Landsdowne; Garwal, India was installed on May 5, 2001, at Mahatma Gandhi Singel in Zoetermeer. It was unveiled by H.E. Mr. P. Menon, The Ambassador of India, and Dr. L. van Leeuwen, The Mayor of Zoetermeer.

The bust was sponsored by:

A bronze bust of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore a gift from the Government and the people of India was unveiled by H.E. Ms. Bhaswati Mukherjee, Ambassador of India to the Netherlands and Mr. Rabin Baldewsingh, Deputy Mayor of The Hague on 6 May 2011 at Public Library of The Hague. The bust is sculptured by Mr. Gautam Pal [www.gautampal.com] who has some of the finest art works all over the world to his credit.
